Botswana has some of the best wildlife on the planet, and the highest density of elephants and buffalo found anywhere in Africa.

This Botswana safari holiday starts with a visit to the thundering Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, before crossing the border to Chobe National Park for both land and river-based game viewing. Then fly by light aircraft deep into the pristine Okavango Delta wetlands, for water-based game viewing by traditional mokoro canoe. Bird watching is also outstanding.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive in Victoria Falls

You will be met at Victoria Falls Airport in Zimbabwe and transferred to your hotel near the mighty Zambezi River.

Check in, settle in and relax whilst you catch your first glimpses of the magnificent ‘Smoke That Thunders’ first discovered by Dr. David Livingstone and still one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. The flow of water over the Victoria Falls is greatest from February to June following the summer rains, but they are a magnificent sight at any time of year.

Day 2: Zambezi River & Victoria Falls

Today we recommend exploring on foot the mighty Victoria Falls and its rainforests, which offer magnificent views.

Afterwards you may wish to visit Elephants Walk, a small crafts complex across the road from The Kingdom hotel, where you can see talented local artists and sculptors at work and support them by buying one of their items. Alternatively you can participate in various optional activities, such as a helicopter flight over the falls or an elephant interaction.

In the late afternoon we recommend an optional cruise on the Zambezi River where you may see hippos, crocodiles and abundant bird life.

Note: We suggest you take your own raincoat for walking in the rainforest, as those on hire are well used.

Day 3: Transfer to Chobe National Park, Botswana

This morning take a shared 2 hour transfer to the Botswana border at Kasane. After completing immigration formalities, connect with your onward transfer to your game lodge situated near the Chobe River.

Chobe National Park is Botswana’s premier wildlife reserve and is uniquely situated at the confluence of the Zambezi and Chobe Rivers, where four African countries meet – Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

After checking in to your lodge, enjoy a boat ride on the Chobe River, which is home to some of Botswana’s most spectacular wildlife, as well as abundant bird life. Game viewing opportunities should present themselves almost immediately in this vast game sanctuary and hopefully you will see elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, antelope and other river-based wildlife today. Afterwards dine in the atmosphere that only the African bushveld can provide.

Day 4: Game Viewing

Rise at dawn to take advantage of the best game viewing conditions of the day and enjoy a thrilling open-top game viewing drive with a lodge ranger.

Chobe National Park is home to vast herds of buffalo and elephant, as well as numerous other species which roam in profusion and diversity. During the dry season, vast elephant herds migrate from both south and north to congregate in their thousands along the Chobe River – the largest concentration of elephants in the whole of Africa. Also hope to see lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, hippo, kudu, crocodiles, antelope, waterbuck, warthogs, baboons and many other interesting animals before returning to your lodge.

Bird life along the river is also plentiful and you can hope to see a fish eagle, tawny eagle, African openbill stork, marabou stork, sacred ibis, pied kingfisher, cattle egret, great egret, spur-winged goose and much more, including Botswana's national bird - the glorious lilac-breasted roller.

In the afternoon, enjoy another game-viewing boat ride on the Chobe River.

Day 5: Game Viewing

Today enjoy two more game activities in Chobe National Park.

Activities on offer vary by lodge, but usually include fishing on the Zambezi River, addition game drives in Chobe National Park or boat rides on the river, which gives you a completely different wildlife perspective. Some lodges offer excursions to a Namibian village across the river to see their culture and way of life, with immigration formalities at both Kasane and on the Namibian side.

After a beautiful African sunset, enjoy the balmy evening and pristine stars of the Milky Way – including the spectacular Southern Cross.

Day 6: Fly to Okavango Delta

Enjoy a final early morning game drive in Chobe National Park before breakfast and your 15 minute transfer to Kasane Airport for your light aircraft flight to your game lodge in the heart of the Okavango Delta.

You will be met at the landing strip and transferred to your Okavango Delta game lodge. Settle in and relax in this pristine water wilderness and enjoy game viewing under spectacular blue African skies before dinner.

Note: As you will be flying in a light aircraft you must pack soft sports bags only, as rigid suitcases will not fit into the luggage pods. A baggage allowance of 15 kg (which includes your hand luggage) is strictly enforced for safety reasons.

Day 7: Game Viewing

The seasonal Okavango Delta is flooded annually by the Okavango River, which flows inland from Angola into the dry sands of the vast Kalahari – never finding the sea, but instead forming a huge inland delta whose waters are absorbed by the desert.

Comprising 6,000 square miles of crystal clear channels, serene lagoons and a myriad of islands, the Okavango Delta forms a natural oasis that sustains a vast variety of wildlife and birds of all descriptions. The waters are at their height from July to October, forming an amazing wetlands ecosystem that is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

Activities at your lodge centre on early morning and late afternoon game viewing and bird watching, with experienced local guides. These include exploring the delta by mokoro canoe and river craft, as well as guided nature walks on the islands of the delta to track some of the larger species that inhabit this water wilderness - including buffalo, hippo and elephants. Optional angling for tiger fish and wild bream is also available.

In the evening relax around a blazing fire under balmy African skies, whilst exchanging notes about your game sightings.

Day 8: Fly Home

After a final game drive, transfer to the landing strip for your light aircraft flight to Maun Airport and your flight home.
