SAMPLE ITINERARY
The British Virgin Islands is part of a volcanic archipelago situated east of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. This British Overseas Territory is comprised of four main islands and a scattering of over 60 breathtakingly beautiful small islands and cays, several of which are named after pirates. It is known for its reef-lined beaches and wonderful sailing, with luxury places to stay scattered across the archipelago.
The largest island of Tortola is home to the capital Road Town, which has a harbour dotted with sailing boats. It has several spectacular white-sand beaches, including Cane Garden Bay and Smuggler’s Cove, and you can swim with dolphins at Prospect Reef. The lush rainforests of Sage Mountain National Park in the south-west, offer walking trails and sweeping views over the neighbouring cays.
The Baths National Park on the tropical island of Virgin Gorda is a labyrinth of gargantuan granite boulders that are believed to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure novel, Treasure Island. The Baths offer world-class snorkelling in warm waters teeming with marine life, including green turtles and eagle rays.
Anegada is a low-lying coral island known for secluded beaches such as Loblolly Bay and Cow Wreck Beach. Horseshoe Reef is one of the largest barrier reefs in the Caribbean, with superb diving in an underwater world rich in marine life and dotted with shipwrecks. A stop at a waterside restaurant to enjoy fresh Anegada lobster is a must. This island is also home to flamingos, rock iguanas and rare plants such as sea lavender.
Jost Van Dyke island is known for its yacht anchorages, including the sheltered bay at Great Harbour. Casual bars and restaurants dot the sandy beaches here and at nearby White Bay, where you will also find Soggy Dollar Bar, a legendary rum shack that invented ‘The Painkiller’ cocktail - reached by swimming up to it. Bubbly Pool is a naturally formed sea pool in the north-east, and Guana is a privately owned island with seven powdery white sandy beaches and 850 acres of tropical forest, emerald mountains, hills and valleys. The island has a small resort, but is mostly a nature reserve.
The British Virgin Islands are one of the premier sailing spots in the world, with warm calm waters and well-equipped marinas. You can also take a fishing trip around the islands.
Largely undeveloped, the best way to explore these islands is by boat. Find your very own sandy cove, explore the rich sea life, swim in crystal clear sapphire waters and enjoy a slice of paradise - as you imagine tales of pirates and buried gold. From cove and cay hopping to delicious rustic cuisine, relax and enjoy the simple untouched beauty of your surroundings. Relish a tasty lobster with a fiery Pusser’s rum - the perfect end to a heavenly day.
