DETAILED ITINERARY

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands and known as the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’. It is largely unspoiled and has some of the best beaches, with over 30 miles of beautiful white sands. It has a relaxing vibe and Canarian food is simply delicious. Make sure you try ‘Majorero’, a local goat’s cheese, and of course the tasty ‘wrinkly’ potatoes.

There is a wide selection of accommodation options, ranging from Corralejo in the north to Costa Calma in the south. With warm clear waters and over 150 beaches, Fuerteventura is popular for water sports - especially windsurfing and kitesurfing as the island is windy. Other activities on offer include sea kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, cycling, horse riding and boat trips.

Car hire is recommended to explore this island, which has vast natural landscapes and wonderful coastal views. The whole island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with the sand dunes of Corralejo Natural Park in the north being especially spectacular. They can be explored by dune buggy or on foot. On the north-west coast you can also visit El Cotillo, a small village with some amazing lagoons and peaceful Playa de la Cocha, where you can relax away from the larger resorts. You can also take a day trip by ferry from Corralejo to Isla de Lobos, an uninhabited island off the north-east coast where you can swim in beautiful coves and lagoons, or take a 4 hour boat trip around the island.

On the west coast you can explore the large caves in Ajuy (remember to wear closed shoes, as the path is rocky). If you are interested in local culture, take the winding mountain road through Betancuria - a charming old town that was once the capital of the island, with lovely white buildings and pretty flowers. The small hamlet of Puertito de los Molinos, further north on the same coastline, also has caves that can be explored at low tide.

In the south of the island, picture-postcard Sotavento Lagoon hosts many windsurfing championships and Oasis Park is a zoo and botanical garden with a large collection of cacti. Cofete is another spectacular beach, accessed by an unpaved and bumpy road.

On the east coast, Salinas del Carmen are the island’s only remaining salt flats. The capital of Puerto del Rosario is not the prettiest town, but it does have an interesting sculpture park.

Fuerteventura can easily be combined with nearby Lanzarote as a twin-centre holiday, as the two islands are connected by ferry and offer totally different holiday experiences.
