Canary Islands: Holidays to Lanzarote
Tailor-Made with Boutique Options
DETAILED ITINERARY
Lanzarote is one of the less developed Canary Islands, favoured by families. It is an island of extreme beauty, with a rugged landscape of jagged black volcanos, contrasting white sandy beaches & sleepy green valleys.
The extraordinary volcanic upheavals on Lanzarote have shaped a surprising landscape & the island is covered by multi-coloured lava. This is especially spectacular in Timanfaya National Park, which has a sea of lava with 25 craters & unusual moon landscapes. Cueva de los Verdes has caverns formed by an underground lava river.
Most visitors stay in Playa Blanca in the south, or in the resort town of Puerto del Carmen on the east coast, with its whitewashed houses, lovely beaches & busy Marina Rubicon full of yachts, seafront cafes & duty-free shops. Elsewhere you will find fertile farmlands, volcanic hills & villages with a peaceful charm of their own, such as the small fishing village of Arrieta in the north-east.
The island was granted UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status largely due to the work of local artist Cesar Manrique, who managed to combine man-made constructions with the natural beauty of the island. The seven Centres of Art, Culture & Tourism designed by the artist are a must-see, including the underground Jameas del Agua caves, which open to the sky & contain a restaurant, curvy pool & bar built into the rocks.
Many outdoor sea swimming pools can be found along the south and east coasts. These are mostly natural formations in the rocks, with only steps & ladders added. Other attractions include the Cactus Garden, which is laid out like an amphitheatre in an old quarry & Teguise, the oldest settlement in the Canaries that was the capital of Lanzarote for 450 years. It’s full of attractive white buildings, squares and palm trees, with a great Sunday market (top buys are local cheeses & leather bags).
Opportunities for outdoor activities abound including water sports, walking, cycling & surfing on Famara’s epic beach. There is a golf course in Teguise & you can take a day trip by ferry from Playa Blanca to neighbouring Fuerteventura. Canarian food & wine is also simply delicious. Lanzarote has managed to avoid the worst excesses of tourism and retains a calm & easy pace.
