Corsica Walking Holidays:

Luxury Villas + Hotel Packages + Tailor-Made

French-speaking Corsica is a small mountainous island in the Mediterranean, with a low-key feel. It has a mix of coastal towns, dense forested peaks and spectacular beaches that wouldn’t look out of place in the Caribbean, ranging from busy Pietracorbara to remote Saleccia and Rondinara.

With nearly half the island falling within a national park, it is ideal for Corsica walking holidays and cycling, ranging from gentle trails to the challenging GR 20. Water sports & diving are also popular, as is eating out as the cuisine is delicious, but there is very little night life. Accommodation ranges from luxury villas to cost-effective hotel packages, with many tailor-made options.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

Many different walking holidays are available, but here is a sample moderately challenging self-guided walking itinerary, suitable if you are used to regular exercise and uphill climbs. This trip blends the stunning scenery of the central mountains with the beautiful coastline of the north, staying in just two locations - Corte and Calvi. The accommodation used is simple and you do not need to walk each day. Departs on Sundays from mid May to September. Min two people.

Day 1: Arrive in Calvi & transfer to Corte

After flying into Calvi, a transfer will be arranged from the airport to Corte, the historic capital of Corsica. Settle in to your hotel and enjoy dinner at an excellent local restaurant.

Day 2: Tavignano Gorges and Natural Rock Pools

After breakfast, make your way to the citadel of Corte for the start of a stunning day's walk along the Tavignano Gorge. Reach a bridge over the Tavignano, under which you can swim in the beautiful clear waters of its natural rock pools. Return to Corte via the same route, with magnificent views down the valley.

Distance 12 km. Walking: 4 hours. Altitude gain: +450m. Descent: -450m

Day 3: Restonica Gorges and Mountain Lakes

After breakfast, a taxi will pick you up and take you to the shepherd's hut at Grotelle, where you will start your walk. After an ascent, you will reach a small plateau that marks your arrival at a new shepherd's hut, which in the summer season sells its own cheese. Continue to climb until you reach Lake Melo, before continuing on to Lake Capitello. Return to the shepherd's hut at Grotelle, where you will be offered the chance to try the local charcuterie.

Distance 4.5 km. Walking: 4 hours. Altitude gain: +600m. Descent: -600m

Day 4: Train from Corte to Calvi

Take the train in the morning to Calvi, or enjoy some more time in Corte and depart in the afternoon - the choice is yours. The train will cross some fantastic scenery before reaching Calvi, your home for the second half of your trip.

This charming seaside town has a lively centre during the summer. There is an old citadel and a small port lined with bars and restaurants, plus you can spend some of your time relaxing on the beach and swimming in the sea or the hotel pool. An included dinner will be arranged for you in the centre of town tonight.

Day 5: La Revellata Lighthouse and the Coast

After breakfast you will begin your walk from the foot of the citadel and the monument to Christopher Columbus. Your walk will take you south along the coast and onto the Revellata Peninsula. You can enjoy bathing at the various secluded little beaches on the peninsula before reaching the lighthouse. From here, you can return to Calvi along a path on the top of the peninsula.

Distance 14 km. Walking: 3.5 hours. Altitude gain: +430m. Decent: -430m

Day 6: Notre Dame de la Serra above Calvi

Today you will leave the coast and follow a path that takes you into the interior amongst the Corsican scrub (or maquis) until you reach the chapel of the Notre Dame de la Serra. From here, the view back towards the Gulf of Calvi, the citadel and the Revellata Peninsula is superb. You can either return directly to Calvi from here, or continue on the path that takes you further up the mountainside.

Distance from 5 km. From 2 to 4 hours of walking, depending upon which option you choose. Altitude: +180m. Descent: -180m

Day 7: Explore Calvi

At leisure to explore the charming town of Calvi. Spend time relaxing on the beach, or venture into the citadel and marvel at the views.

Wandering around the old streets will transport you into a Corsica of old, while polyphonic singing performances and music festivals highlight the island’s expressive culture.

Day 8: Fly Home

Transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Note: You will need to carry a day pack with water bottle, camera, picnic and weatherproof jacket. Your main luggage will be transported by vehicle between the different night stops by local taxis or hotel owners, so please limit this to around 15kg per bag to facilitate the transfer vehicles. Our bag-moving service means you can travel light during your walks, just taking what you need for the day, although it may be necessary for you to carry your bags short distances at the start and towards the end of your holiday. Soft bags are preferred.

On your walks you should be prepared for all conditions, as Corsica is known for its many micro climates and the weather can change quickly. The mountains can also generate some stormy, often unpredictable weather and each valley can be very different, with wide ranging temperatures. Take powerful sun protection, as well as a warm fleece and weatherproof jacket.

We recommend that you bring some trail food or high energy bars for your walks, although picnics can be purchased from bakers or small supermarkets. Alternatively main provisions can be purchased from larger supermarkets in Calvi.

Bring sufficient Euros (in cash) to cover all your personal expenses, including snacks and drinks, as it is impossible to change money here and trying to find a working cash machine can be problematic.
