Croatia Holidays:
Zadar + Plitvice Lakes National Park + Krka
SAMPLE ITINERARY
The Zadar Riviera on the central Adriatic coast offers unspoilt resorts and four of Croatia’s famous national parks only a few hours away.
You can stay in historic Zadar itself, with its UNESCO-listed ramparts & striking forum that is testament to its Roman occupation & take easy day trips by ferry to hidden beaches on the nearby islands. Alternatively stay in one of the nearby Mediterranean resorts such as pretty Biograd na Moru, with its narrow streets and good stone and pebble beaches. Vodice is another option, a former fishing village which has a pretty waterfront & harbour, and holds a jazz and blues festival in late July.
Plitvice Lakes National Park is the most visited national park in Croatia, with 16 spectacular turquoise lakes & numerous waterfalls along an 8 km trail. It is only 2 hours away, but this breathtakingly beautiful UNESCO-listed natural heritage site needs time to be explored so you can easily spend a few nights here.
The stunning Kornati National Park is an archipelago of around 100 tiny islands and reefs, mostly uninhabited & best seen by boat on a day trip from Murter in northern Dalmatia. Gorgeous Krka National Park has around 17 blue cascades tumbling down over limestone sediment, resulting in beautiful pools in semi-submerged forest, whilst the gorges, mountains & caves of Paklenica National Park are excellent for hiking, with a series of tunnels & bunkers built for defence.
The historic town of Sibenik is also only an hour away, so you an spend a few nights here too. The 15th century stone Cathedral of St. James is decorated with 71 sculpted faces and the Šibenik Museum, set in the 14th century Prince’s Palace, has exhibits ranging from pre-history to the present. The white stone St. Michael’s Fortress has an open-air theatre, with views of Šibenik Bay and neighbouring islands.
