Croatia Self-Drive Holidays:
Spilt + Plitvice Lakes + Dubrovnik
SAMPLE ITINERARY
The historic city of Split has a vibrant old city with churches, squares, columns and spires in a variety of architectural styles. Surrounded by the original walls of the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace, it is today a UNECO listed site with a peristyle (central square) filled with cafes and bars. This Mediterranean city has a pedestrianised riva (seafront promenade) and the long Bacvice beach is part-sandy. Green Marjan Hill, covered in dense pine forest, overlooks the city. Split Summer Festival is held between mid-July and mid-August each year. You can stay within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace or in the modern city, and the bustling port has great connections for day trips by ferry or catamaran to the surrounding islands.
After exploring Split, drive north tor 3 hours towards the stunning Plitvice Lakes. Along the way be sure to stop for a swim at Krka National Park, which has around 17 blue waterfalls tumbling down over limestone sediment, resulting in many beautiful pools surrounded by semi-submerged forest.
Plitvice Lakes National Park is the most visited national park in Croatia, with 16 spectacular turquoise lakes and numerous waterfalls along an 8 km trail. This breathtakingly beautiful UNESCO listed natural heritage site needs time to be explored, so you can easily spend a few days here.
Then head south again, driving 5 hours to the famous walled city of Dubrovnik on the Dalmatian Coast, stopping for lunch at the medieval walled city of Trogir, another UNESCO World Heritage site, with its Venetian palaces & pedestrianised Old Town. Continuing south down the Dalmatian Coast, be sure to keep your passports handy, as a short section of this coastal road runs through Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is an independent country outside the European Union.
On arrival in Dubrovnik you can explore this old city that was built between the 11th & 17th centuries, with its wide streets and many magnificent palaces, churches, chapels, monasteries, cloisters, squares, museums, mansions & huge ramparts. There is a regular shuttle boat to Lokrum Island and other sights include the Trsteno Arboretum and Peljesac Peninsula, including Ston and its defensive Great Walls. You can visit Mljet National Park on Mljet Island, where the two main water bodies appear to be lakes, but are actually narrow inlets connected to the sea. The larger lake is home to St Mary’s Island with its Benedictine monastery and has relatively flat walking and biking trails. Excursions are also available to the Elaphiti islands, Korcula and neighbouring Montenegro. The famous Dubrovnik Summer Festival is usually held between mid-July and late-August, and don’t forget to take the cable car up Mount Srd for breathtaking views.
