The Dominican Republic (or DR as it’s called) is the second largest island in the Caribbean after Cuba. With a predominantly Hispanic culture, this diverse island has a rich history and culture, and a wealth of natural wonders. Lapped by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the warm turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea in the south, its long coastline has over 250 miles of some of the world's most beautiful beaches, set against a lush mountain backdrop.

Punta Cana on the easternmost tip of the island is home to many luxury all inclusive resorts, hugging the shores of the magnificent ‘Coconut Coast’. Dominican food is delicious, and in the evening you can dance to the irresistible beat of traditional merengue music.

Further north, Playa Rincon is one of the world's best beaches, with three miles of pristine white sands dotted with coconut palms, fringing a turquoise bay, with seafront restaurants serving up the freshest of fish.

You can enjoy dolphin and whale watching in the bays, see crocodiles in Lago Enriquillo and iguanas in the desert-like cacti-spotted southwest. Bird watchers can see several endemic species such as the Ridgway's hawk on hiking trips in the national parks.

The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean's top spots for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. You can enjoy snorkelling and diving, and there are over 25 designer golf courses set along the stunning coastline.

Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, you can explore centuries of island history by visiting the ruins of this legendary explorer's home in Puerto Plata. Stroll through the cobblestoned streets of the capital, Santo Domingo, one of the Caribbean's oldest cities with an historic ‘Zona Colonial’ lined with colonial buildings dating from the 16th century. Visit the cathedral, Alcazar de Colon Palace and some fascinating local museums, before stopping off at a café on the Plaza de Espana.

The Dominican Republic knows how to celebrate, and February is Carnival time - marking the island's independence from Haiti in 1844. Festivities go on all month, with street parties and colourful celebrations, culminating in an all-night extravaganza. In the summer months of July and August, the Festival de Merengue celebrates the history of Dominican dance, where you party round the clock.

With an abundance of world-class resorts set on fine beaches, lots of colonial-era history, remote inland areas and a culture of dance and music, the Dominican Republic offers a relaxing Caribbean island holiday at a wide variety of price points to meet all budgets.
