Douro River Cruises, Portugal:
Porto to Salamanca + Wine Tasting + Lisbon
SAMPLE ITINERARY
The Douro River is the fastest flowing (and third longest) river on the Iberian Peninsula, rising in central Spain and flowing westwards through the rugged and dramatic green landscapes of northern Portugal, where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean at the medieval city of Porto.
Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, known for its port wine production and stately bridges. Most trips begin with a night or two in this hilly UNESCO World Heritage city. In the medieval Ribeira (riverside) district, enjoy wandering through the narrow cobbled streets that wind past merchants’ houses and cafes, and take a trip on a traditional ‘rabelo’ - the wooden vessels that once carried the fortified port wine. Other key attractions include the Church of Saint Francis, with its lavish baroque interior and ornate gilded carvings, and the palatial 19th century Bolsa Palace that was once a stock market.
After exploring this historic city, you will then embark on your river cruise along the Douro River - navigating 130 miles from Porto to Vega Terron on the Spanish border, a trip which takes about one week. Unlike the Rhine and Danube, which are bustling commercial arteries for the towns and cities that have grown up along their banks, the Douro is a quiet river with the focus on enjoying the spectacular scenery and savouring the fine food and wine. The river boats on the Douro are also smaller, creating a more intimate onboard atmosphere.
Once a wild and turbulent waterway, the Douro has been tamed by five dams including the enormous Carrapatelo Dam, the world's deepest lock. Sailing past its 115ft walls is an incredible experience.
The photogenic Douro Valley is sleepy, with the emphasis on relaxing and enjoying the sun-soaked Iberian countryside, as you sail past terraces of vineyards and hillside villages. Stops include Regua, in the heart of port wine country, where you will disembark for a coach excursion to Lamego. Here you can admire the 18th century Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies pilgrimage church, which stands atop a 686 step baroque staircase. You will also call at Pinhao, a favourite haunt for port wine tastings.
On arrival in Vega Terron, take a full day coach excursion to the city of Salamanca in Spain, which is two hours away. Salamanca is an architectural gem, with a grand main square built in Spanish baroque style and surrounded by three-story arcade buildings. With a history dating back to the Celtic era, it is known for its ornate sandstone architecture and for its famous university.
At the end of your cruise we suggest adding on a couple of nights in Portugal’s capital city of Lisbon. Built on seven hills around the banks of the Tagus River, Lisbon was the departure point of the great explorers who set off to find the ‘New World’ in the 16th and 17th centuries. As a result Lisbon is steeped in a rich maritime history, charting the Golden Age of Discovery. Lisbon successfully combines this tradition with all the excitement of a modern and cosmopolitan European city.
