DETAILED ITINERARY
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory situated close to the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It is dominated by the iconic Rock of Gibraltar, a 426m high limestone ridge that guards the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. First settled by the Moors in the Middle Ages and later ruled by Spain, it was ceded to Britain in 1713 and remains a strategic naval port.
Combining warm and relaxing Mediterranean sun with Spanish tapas, red English post boxes and traditional tea and scones, this charming city nation is very small – just over 4 square miles. The buzzing Old Town has a cobbled central piazza surrounded by shops, restaurants and pubs that are all easily explored on foot. You can find well-known British high street brands, as well as many small boutiques in the winding side streets and elegant squares, with great bargains to be found in leather wear, ranging from belts to bags and coats. The marina bobs with luxury yachts, upmarket restaurants and glitzy casinos, whilst the small sandy beaches at Catalan Bay and Sandy Bay are within easy reach.
The Rock of Gibraltar is accessed by cable car and offers stunning views over the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean and Morocco’s Rif Mountains. This 200 million-year-old limestone peak is latticed with Neanderthal caves and a network of underground military bunkers, and is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can visit the largest one, Saint Michael’s Cave, which is filled with impressive limestone grottos, stalactites and stalagmites. Concerts are sometimes performed in the fabulous Cathedral Cave.
At the top of the rock there is a nature reserve that is home to the famous Barbary macaques, the last free-ranging population of monkeys in Europe - possibly brought over from Morocco by the Moors. The noises they made during the Great Siege of Gibraltar between 1779-1783, when they were repeatedly disturbed by attacking Spanish and French forces and thereby alerting the British night watch, gave rise to the saying that ‘as long as the monkeys remain on the Rock, so will the British’. If you have a head for heights, you can walk along the stunning Skywalk and across the Windsor Suspension Bridge, both of which are especially spectacular at sunset.
Other sights include the remains of a 14th century Moorish Castle, perched high above the Old Town, and the 18th century Great Siege Tunnels that were expanded during World War II. You can also visit Europa Point, the southernmost point of Gibraltar’s peninsula. Here you can see the historic Trinity Lighthouse, as well as the Shrine of our Lady of Europe and the impressive Mosque of The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.
Wildlife lovers can enjoy the enormous bird and butterfly migrations that soar over in springtime, on their way from Africa to Europe. Beneath the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, whales and dolphins pass by in huge numbers, with dolphin-watching boat tours on offer.
If you hire a car, Marbella and the attractive Andalusian coast of southern Spain are within easy reach.
