The capital of Vienna was formerly the seat of the Hapsburg Empire and is strewn with architectural riches, whist the cities of Graz and Linz are also fabulous with Gothic churches and Baroque cathedrals. Explore Salzburg in the beautiful Tyrol, venturing into the countryside where cowbells tinkle in flower-filled meadows, and visit the winter capital of Innsbruck, with its many ski resorts. You can also discover other charming villages such as Hallstatt, in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Salzkammergut. Walkers can explore the lakes, forests, mountains and valleys of the Austrian Alps, whilst those wanting a more leisurely holiday can take a river cruise down the beautiful Danube. This is the land of the ‘Sound of Music’ and it surrounds you everywhere. In the winter moths, you can visit some of Austria’s wonderful Christmas markets and enjoy the warming ‘gluhwein’.
