SAMPLE ITINERARY

With an abundance of clean sandy beaches, traditional Greek villages and plenty of sunshine, the seven pretty olive- and pine-clad Ionian Islands, located off the west coast of Greece, are amongst the most popular.

Corfu is the largest island, with rugged mountains and a resort-studded shoreline. Its cultural heritage reflects years spent under Venetian, French and British rule before it was united with Greece in 1864. The Corfu Old Town has winding medieval lanes, a French-style arcade and the Grand Palace of St. Michael and St. George. Its entrance is flanked by two imposing Venetian fortresses.

Kefalonia (or Cephalonia) is further south and has sandy coves and dry rugged landscapes, made famous in the movie ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’. Its capital of Argostoli is built on a hillside overlooking a narrow harbour and the indented coastline has limestone cliffs, bays and short strips of white sand, such as Myrtos Beach in the north. Many beaches are only accessible on foot or via narrow twisting roads.

Paxos (or Paxi) is one of the least commercial islands. It is truly beautiful, with scenery that makes it an artist’s paradise. Beautiful Zakynthos is known for its famous Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach, with fine sandy beaches and turquoise waters.

Other options include Lefkada (Lefkas) which has many traditional villages & is connected to the mainland by a causeway; and the small islands of Ithaca, Meganisi & Kythira (or Cythera) in the south.
