Depart from any UK National Rail station and travel to Liverpool or Heysham in time for the evening ferry to the Isle of Man. With the crossing taking around 2 hours and 45 mins from Liverpool, and slightly longer from Heysham, you’ll arrive on the island at around 10pm. Your well-appointed hotel can be found a mile along the promenade with a taxi-rank located at the ferry-port should the evening stroll not be enticing.
Day 2-4 – Explore by Various Transport
Three days to explore the Isle of Man. Your Go Explore tickets allow unlimited travel on all scheduled bus services as well as the Steam Railway, Manx Electric Railway, the Snaefell Mountain Railway and the Douglas Horse Trams.
Whilst your Go Explore ticket gives you the freedom to travel as you wish for your stay in the Isle of Man there a few “Must Do’s” for families; Why not take the Steam Railway to Port Erin with its secluded bay and sandy beach, an ideal day out for families. En route you could stop off at Castletown, originally the capital until 1869, where children will enjoy exploring the medieval castle which dominates the town. (entry fee applies)
You could consider taking the Electric Tramway, with a Horse Tram connection a few steps from your hotel, to the north of the island. Consider stopping off in Groudle Glen and ride the miniature railway along the Glen. Further along the tramway you’ll find Laxey with multiple family friendly options including riding the tiny Laxey Mine Railway, riding the Snaefell Mountain Railway or visiting the famous Laxey Wheel (entry fee applies) where you can climb to the top for a family photo then put on a hard hat to explore the underground mine. For a real expedition, continue your journey on trails through the valley to see old mine buildings.
