SAMPLE ITINERARY
Jamaica has huge personality, from its tropical sandy beaches and coral reefs to its delicious food and irresistible reggae music. One of the largest Caribbean islands, it has lush mountains, rainforests and reef-lined beaches, combined with a wide range of beach resorts and a distinctive urban culture.
Rivers and waterfalls rush through jungle-clad mountains, forests and banana plantations towards miles of some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, where rustic beach huts serve up delicious ackee (a type of fruit) and spicy jerk chicken, accompanied by rum and the sultry beat of reggae.
Many luxury boutique hotels and all-inclusive resorts are clustered in Montego Bay in the north, with its lovely British colonial architecture, whilst Negril in the west is known for its coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, and many great diving and snorkelling sites. As the birthplace of reggae music, the capital of Kingston is home to the Bob Marley Museum, dedicated to this legendary singer.
You can enjoy afternoon tea at Rose Hall Great House, visit a rum distillery or play golf on some of the world’s finest championship courses. From Red Stripe beer to Blue Mountain coffee, the landscapes of this island are as diverse as the products it is home to.
If you are adventurous you can trek through lush tropical rainforest, swim in the stunning Dunn’s River Falls, experience the thrill of bamboo rafting up Martha Brae River and climb the beautiful Blue Mountain Peak, the highest on the island. The Mystic Mountain adventure park in Ocho Rios has several adrenalin inducing ziplines, as well as a 1,000m tree-lined bobsled track that winds down the mountain through the rainforest.
Deep sea fishing for marlin, mahi-mahi, yellow fin tuna and barracuda is also popular, with your catch grilled on the beach.
Over the years Jamaica has attracted many famous visitors including the author, Ian Fleming, who wrote several of his James Bond 007 novels whilst staying here.
Floyd’s Pelican Bar, a stilted bar built off the coast of Treasure Beach on the south coast, is the epitome of easy-going Jamaican charm. Whether it is experiencing the nightlife of Kingston, exploring the music scene – reggae, ska, soca, calypso – or learning more about the central role this island played in the notorious colonial slave trade, this Caribbean island has many captivating stories to share.
