SAMPLE ITINERARY
New York has five boroughs, with Manhattan Island at its urban core, making it a relatively easy city to get around on foot, by taxi cab or Metro subway. As there is so much to see and do, it helps to plan your day to ensure you don’t have to double back on yourself, but be sure to walk through Grand Central Terminal, with its amazing architecture.
New York’s must see sights include Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty, which can be seen from the Ellis Island ferry that departs from Battery Park on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. In this part of the city you will also find the 9/11 Memorial, the new One World Trade Centre observation deck, and the iconic Wall Street bull.
In the Downtown area you can wander through Chinatown and Greenwich Village, pop into Chelsea Food Market and walk the High Line (a former rail line that has been transformed into an urban walking trail), before heading to Rockefeller Plaza and the ‘Top of the Rock’ in Midtown, for views of the Empire State building and Central Park. A walk or carriage ride through this enormous park is a must, including visits to places such as John Lennon’s memorial at Strawberry Fields, Central Park Zoo, Belvedere Castle and the lake.
You will need a full day to appreciate the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which contains more than two million works of art spanning a period of over 5,000 years. The Natural History Museum and the Guggenheim are also both world class. St. Patrick's Cathedral is one of New York's finest examples of Gothic architecture with massive bronze doors, white marble facade, 330-foot spires, great organ, rose window, bronze baldachin and Pieta statue. New York Public Library and the paintings, porcelain and furniture of the Frick Collection, should also not be overlooked.
You can shop ‘til you drop on Fifth Avenue, browse in Macy’s department store, Bloomingdale’s and Tiffany & Co, enjoy the fashions of SoHo, Madison and Bedford Avenues - or search for designer discounts at Century 21. FAO Schwarz is toy heaven, whilst Dylan’s Candy Bar will also delight. The Strand offers books galore, whilst Brooklyn’s Flea Market is simply fascinating.
The culinary scene in New York is also fabulous, ranging from hamburgers, hot dogs, pretzels and donuts, to every type of international food and some of the best restaurants in the world. For example, you can enjoy dinner and pre-show entertainment at the Stardust Diner, before heading to a Broadway performance in Times Square; dine at a top restaurant and take in a concert at the Carnegie Hall; or soak up the Art Deco atmosphere of Radio City Music Hall. New York is, after all, the ‘City that Never Sleeps’!
