SAMPLE ITINERARY
Puerto Rico consists of one large island and dozens of smaller cays and islets situated in the Caribbean Sea, east of Cuba. This alluring archipelago is an unincorporated USA territory that has been moulded by Spanish, American and Caribbean influence.
Claimed by Christopher Columbus in the 1400s and then won by the United States some 400 years later, both Latino and American influences predominate, yet a laid-back Caribbean way of life still prevails. As a result of its fascinating history, it has a unique culture unlike any other country in the Caribbean.
Puerto Rico’s landscape is varied, consisting of dazzling beaches, coral islands, waterfalls and lush forested mountains. The shallow tropical waters make it fantastic for diving and snorkelling holidays. Deep sea fishing, kayaking and surfing are also popular.
The island has many luxury beach resorts, set on magnificent beaches. San Juan, the capital and largest city, has a hotel strip in the Isla Verde region with many beach bars, casinos and a vibrant nightlife, whilst Old San Juan features colourful Spanish colonial buildings, crumbling historical architecture, and the massive 17th and 18th century fortresses of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and La Fortaleza.
Located on the slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo mountains in the north-east, misty El Yunque National Forest is teeming with plant and animal life. A walkway winds through the treetops, with walking trails leading to La Mina waterfall and Mount Britton, then up to the high-altitude dwarf forest. It also has many natural swimming pools. At night the forest comes alive with the calls of coquí tree frogs.
In the north you can hike to the natural limestone formations of Cueva Ventana, where you can view ancient pre-Colombian petroglyphs and stone engravings made by the indigenous Taíno people. The cave’s iconic window-like opening looks out over its lush surroundings.
Just a short boat ride from the mainland are the tiny pristine islands of Culebra and Vieques. With breathtaking beaches such as Flamenco, and coral reefs teeming with marine life, Culebra is one of the most idyllic destinations in the archipelago with outstanding snorkelling and diving at Cayo Luis Peña Natural Reserve. Vieques also has superb beaches and is home to Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. Don’t miss the magical sight of seeing these waters lit up at night by millions of tiny plankton. You can also enjoy the many walking trails in Vieques National Wildlife Refuge.
The regional food is delicious and many coffee plantations have been transformed into museums, offering a fascinating insight into the islands’ agricultural history. From dance lessons to cooking and mixology classes, you can soak up the local culture.
With pristine beaches, warm sunshine, and rich in history and culture, Puerto Rica offers a vibrant Caribbean holiday with a captivating rhythm.
