The French Overseas Territories of St. Barths and St. Martin in the Caribbean are chic and sophisticated, with a distinctively Mediterranean feel. A hideaway for the rich and famous, these two small islands are set back from the main tourist trail, offering the highest standards of hospitality at a selection of exquisite boutique hotels, with glamorous St. Tropez style shopping and exceptional fine dining restaurants.

The smaller island of St. Barths (Saint Barthélemy) is a volcanic island, fully encircled by a shallow reef with a glorious coastline of many coves. Its capital of Gustavia has many stylish pavement cafes, gourmet restaurants and a bustling yacht marina, which is perfect for people watching. Here you can dress up and enjoy the sunset with a Carib beer and lime in hand, whilst watching the glitterati arrive in their gigantic yachts.

Perched above the town is the 17th century Fort Karl, looking out over popular Shell Beach and Wall House has exhibits that highlight the island’s Swedish colonial history.

For a mixture of beautiful Caribbean beaches and the island’s distinctive French influence, you can stay at the epitome of sophistication, Isle de France. The ‘Rock Star’ suite in the famous Eden Rock hotel has its own recording studio and personal butler for pure indulgence.

From French-Creole cuisine to a ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’, St. Barths boasts some of the best food in the Caribbean.

The northern 60% of larger St. Martin island is administered by France, with the southern 40% administered by the Netherlands, making it the only place in the world where these two countries share a border. It therefore has a very cosmopolitan half-Dutch, half-French feel. You can visit historic Fort Louis and picturesque Pic Paradis, where you can climb to the highest point on the island.

French and European culinary influences are apparent on both islands, from buttery croissants and brioche to delectable cheeses, fresh oysters and foie gras, flown in daily from France – a true foodie’s paradise.

Both islands also have wonderful beaches, making them great for water sports. You’ll see many open top beach buggies whizzing around, and it’s definitely the best way to explore.

St. Barth’s Bucket Regatta is a prestigious super yacht race held in March. It is immensely fun to take part in, and equally fun to watch.

It’s not all about the glamour though. These two islands are a great place for simple Caribbean pleasures - such as soaking up the sun, taking in the lush mountainous scenery, or simply sitting back and people watching.
