SAMPLE ITINERARY
St. Kitts and Nevis is an idyllic set of sister islands with impressive volcanic peaks, verdant tropical rainforests, exotic flora and fauna, and an authentic Caribbean vibe. The two islands share a local culture that is mellow, friendly and infused with a pulsing social rhythm, yet each has its own individual identity steeped in French colonial history and traditions.
St. Kitts is the larger of the two islands and home to the international airport. As a result there is more of a buzz on this island, which has beautifully preserved plantation houses that have been converted into boutique hotels, and picture-perfect white sandy beaches. In the charming colonial capital of Basseterre, you can stroll along its pretty streets admiring the architecture and visit the National Museum. You can also visit the vast UNESCO-protected Brimstone Hill Fortress, which dates back to the days of the pirates. It is built high on a hill, with stunning sea views towards Nevis. If you are looking for bars, restaurants and some nightlife, then head to Frigate Bay or Cockleshell Bay.
Across the water, the island of Nevis is delightfully old-fashioned, offering simple laid-back Caribbean charm. Only six by eight miles in size, this small lush island is dominated by the rugged Nevis Peak, a huge volcanic mountain with views of neighbouring St. Kitts in the distance. By law, no building in the capital of Charlestown can be taller than a palm tree, so you won’t find any high-rise hotels here. Instead you will find intimate island inns and charming plantation-style hotels offering fantastic hospitality, as well as unspoiled tropical rainforest, botanical gardens, a bathhouse and hot thermal springs. The beaches on Nevis are particularly spectacular and you can enjoy a potent passion fruit and rum ‘Killer Bee’ cocktail, while watching the sunset on Pinney’s Beach.
Expect traditional Caribbean cuisine on these sunny islands. Salt fish, spicy plantain, coconut dumplings and fresh tropical fruits are some of the dishes on offer.
A variety of water sports are on offer in this two-island nation, as well as some superb championship golf courses. There are also many walking and hiking trails with views of sugarcane fields, volcanic hills and lush rainforests, where monkeys roam free.
